Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start?

Most kids start at age 7. If your child is younger, reach out first. We'll ask a few questions: can your child follow several steps and sit focused for the class? We have machines sized for smaller hands.

Is sewing for boys too?

Yes. Boys and girls join us every week, and every project is gender-neutral. We can't promise who signs up for a given day, but your son won't be out of place.

What levels do you offer?

Starting in 2027, our kids' classes follow this path:

  • Sewing 101 (beginner): safe machine use, speed control, hand position, cutting, measuring, and straight stitching. Most kids take about 2 cycles before moving up.

  • Sewing 102: curved seams and new fabrics. Your child should feel confident on the machine first.

  • Sewing 103: My First Wearables. Kids make their first pieces they can wear.

  • Junior and Advanced programs: by invitation only (see below).

Every child moves at their own pace. We watch each child's skills in class and tell you when they're ready for the next level.

Do you have an advanced program?

Yes, by invitation only. We keep groups to 3–4 students per level so each student gets real attention.

  • Junior Program (6 months): students make wearables, and each one introduces a new fabric and how to handle it.

  • Runway Program (6 months): students choose their own pattern and lead their own project, with guidance on cutting, materials, and construction.

We place students by skill, not age. Most new advanced students start in Junior, even if they already sew clothes. Ask us if you think your child is ready.

When are kids' classes?

  • Friday: 5:30–7:00 pm. A shorter evening class.

  • Saturday: starts at 12:30 pm. A longer class with a smaller group, so many kids move faster.

Both days teach the same level, so pick the day that fits your week. Some classes pause for Fairfax County school holidays.

Do you run camps?

Yes. We run day camps on Fairfax County Public Schools no-school days, plus winter and summer camps. Summer camp includes projects we only teach at camp. See current dates and prices at sewing-lab.com/kids.

How much will my child make at camp?

  • 3-hour camp: a beginner learns to run the machine and finishes 1–2 projects.

  • Full-day camp: most campers finish 2–3 projects, depending on their pace.

Are materials included?

Yes. Machines, tools, fabric, and materials are all included. No extra fees. Kids take home everything they make.

Do you offer private lessons for kids and teens?

Yes. A private lesson is 2 hours, one-on-one, for $260. We build it around your child's level and the project they want to make.

Can we celebrate a birthday in class?

Yes! We love birthdays. To keep every student safe from food allergies, and to keep our fabric and machines clean, we don't allow food or treats in the studio. Let us know ahead of time, and we'll make the day special with a non-food celebration.
